Welcome to Year 6
Croeso i Blwyddyn 6
Class Information
Spring Term 2022
Our topic this term is Eco-Warriors
During the Spring term, we will be investigating a variety of environmental themes such as deforestation, litter and plastic pollution. We will be using our literacy skills to write persuasive letters and adverts and using our mathematical skills to calculate our carbon footprint. We will be using ICT to create our own sustainable villages following our learning.
We will also be linking up with Ponty High School to develop our expressive arts skills further. We will be taking part in dance, music and drama sessions to put on our own ‘mini’ performance of The Greatest Showman.
Autumn Term 2021
Our topic this term is MEXICO.
Hola Mexico!
During the autumn term, we will be travelling to Mexico. We will be exploring this unique country, from it’s towering temples to its fun-packed festivals. Together with our pupil voice, we will be finding out about the importance of music in Mexican culture and have a go at traditional Mexican dancing. We will learn about the ‘Day of the Dead’ and create 3-D skulls. We will investigate and create our own artwork linked to Mexican artists.
We will also be linking up with Ponty High School to develop our expressive arts skills further. We will be taking part in dance, music and drama sessions to put on our own ‘mini’ performance of Matilda.
Summer Term 2021
Our topic this term is Healthy Me, Healthy Planet. During our pupil voice sessions we talked about what we would like to find out and learn.
Here are some of our ideas.

We will be continuing to develop our literacy, numeracy and digital skills as well as learning about the topic 'Holidays' in Welsh.

When you click on it you will see the assignment which you can view and add your work to.
It would be fantastic if you could all upload some work to the folder for the teachers in Pontypridd High to see.
Please let me know if you have any problems.

Our learning
In English, we have continued to look at King Kong. We have looked at what makes a good newspaper report and started planning our own report based on the events in King Kong. Next week, we will write our own reports.
In maths, we have looked at ordering, adding and subtracting negative numbers. We have also looked at calculating temperature differences. We have continued to work on our Big Maths activities too.
In topic, we drew portraits of Sir Francis Drake and compared them to other portraits drawn of him. We made our own compasses and looked the uses of magnets.
In ICT, we started to look at databases. Here is the link to the database we searched.

Friday 25th September 2020
It has been so lovely welcoming year 6 back. We have had a fantastic few weeks settling in and learning new routines. Thank you year 6 for making me feel so welcome and helping me settle in too.
Our learning
In English, we have been busy writing diaries based on the video clip 'The Lighthouse.' We have also started reading King Kong and thinking about the part where King Kong escapes in readiness to write and produce a news report.
In maths, we have recapped reading and writing numbers as well as comparing numbers using the greater than and less than signs. We have also developed our mental and written addition and subtraction skills.
Our topic this term is Explorers. We started the topic by saying what we knew about the topic already and writing questions that we would like to find out. So far, we have researched famous explorers and found out about the Age of Exploration. We have created wanted posters for new explorers during this time and worked collaboratively using google slides to research life on board a Tudor explorer ships.
If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to contact me at school.
Many thanks
Miss Evans
